Yes, I still use my iPhone (because it’s elite), but I pulled out my Canon G7 X PowerShot and I am OBSESSED.
Plot twist: I bought this camera back in 2020, stuck it in the closet, and totally forgot about it.

One thing I always talk to my clients about when it comes to social media is the importance of movement and no, I’m not just talking about dancing in your videos (unless that’s your vibe 😂). Honestly it works, and if you don’t mind someone in your bubble, we can get some pretty amazing shots!

Movement means two things when we’re shooting content:
1. Movement in the shot – Pour the sauce, pull the cheese, dip into the curry, stack the sandwich, take a bite… show the action. That kind of stuff grabs attention way more than just a still shot.
2. Movement with the camera – I’m constantly moving when I shoot. Side to side, in and out, around the cart or table. That movement keeps the video interesting and makes it way more engaging to watch.

This is something I do every time I shoot food content whether I’m filming in Happy Valley, Troutdale, or anywhere else in Oregon. It makes a big difference!

MY CONTENT SHOOT PROCESS

Capturing the Portland food cart scene isn’t just point-and-shoot — it’s a full creative flow. Here’s how I bring each cart’s story (and flavor) to life:
1. Check-In & Dish Planning
When I arrive on-site, I personally check in with each cart. We decide together which dishes they’ll make — I usually ask for 2 mains and 1 appetizer (though most go all out and give me more 😋).
2. Staging the Space
Next, I scout the best spot for natural light — whether that’s in front of the cart, near a picnic table, or by a sunlit wall. I’ll shoot the front of the cart, the owners waving, chatting, or doing something fun for that real connection. I love capturing the personality behind the food.
3. Behind-the-Scenes Cooking Shots
I go inside or behind the cart to film the dish-making process. These BTS moments give energy to the final video and show the heart behind the hustle.
4. The Hero Shots
Once the food’s ready, I take it outside and shoot individual photos and videos in natural light — every detail counts. Think texture, steam, color, and close-ups that make people drool.
5. Interactive “Action” Shots
To bring the content to life, I’ll often offer the food to nearby customers so I can capture movement: dipping, cutting, sauce pouring, bites in action — real moments, not just staged plates.
6. Wrap-Up & Edit Time
After the shoot, I pack up, head home, and start editing — pulling all the pieces together to tell a story that scrolls well, performs even better, and makes people want to show up hungry.
